Liberty Resources, Inc. (LRI) is a Center for Independent Living (CIL) serving Philadelphia, Montgomery, Chester, and Delaware Counties. Founded over 45 years ago, the organization is rooted in the disability rights movement and operates on the principle that services should be provided by people with disabilities for people with disabilities. The organization has supported over 3,200 individuals and helped more than 1,000 people transition out of nursing homes into community living.
Liberty Resources offers six core services designed to promote independence and community inclusion: nursing home transition assistance, youth transition planning, disability rights advocacy, independent living skills training (budgeting, cooking, transportation), peer support (both individual and group-based), and information and referral services. Beyond core services, they provide listed programs including housing counseling with tenant rights education and affordable housing navigation, and a Retreads program that refurbishes and distributes mobility equipment like wheelchairs and walkers.
What distinguishes LRI is their lived-experience model where staff members with disabilities serve people with similar challenges. Their focus on nursing home transitions is particularly notable—helping over 1,000 individuals move from institutional settings back to independent community living represents significant impact. The organization also emphasizes peer-to-peer support, recognizing that people with disabilities often benefit most from guidance provided by others with comparable experiences.
As a non-profit organization, Liberty Resources provides these services free or at low cost, making them genuinely accessible to low and moderate-income individuals with disabilities. However, availability is geographically limited to their service area in southeastern Pennsylvania, and the scope of services is narrower than comprehensive financial counseling (focusing specifically on disability independence rather than general personal finance or credit issues).
