How to Read Your Credit Report

Three companies collect and maintain your credit information:

Equifax — Founded 1899, headquartered in Atlanta. Suffered a massive data breach in 2017 affecting 147 million Americans. Experian — Founded 1996 (but roots go back to 1826), headquartered in Dublin, Ireland. Largest credit bureau globally. TransUnion — Founded 1968, headquartered in Chicago. Not all creditors report to all three, so your reports may differ. This is why checking all three matters. How to get your free reports:

• AnnualCreditReport.com — The ONLY federally authorized source. Free weekly reports from all three bureaus.
• Do NOT use sites like "freecreditreport.com" — these are commercial sites that may require a paid subscription.

A credit report has four main sections:

Section 1: Personal Information

• Full name (and any variations creditors have used)
• Current and previous addresses
• Social Security number (partially masked)
• Date of birth
• Current and previous employers

Check for: Misspellings, addresses you've never lived at (possible fraud), incorrect SSN.

Section 2: Account History (Trade Lines)

This is the most important section. Each account shows:

• Creditor name — Who you owe
• Account type — Revolving, installment, mortgage
• Account status — Open, closed, collection
• Balance — Current amount owed
• Credit limit/original amount — Your limit or original loan amount
• Payment history — Month-by-month: on time, 30 days late, 60 days late, etc.
• Date opened and date of last activity

Check for: Accounts you don't recognize, incorrect balances, late payments that were actually on time.

Section 3: Inquiries

• Hard inquiries: Listed with creditor name and date. Stay for 2 years.
• Soft inquiries: Only visible to you. No impact on score.

Check for: Hard inquiries you didn't authorize (possible fraud).

Section 4: Public Records

• Bankruptcies (Chapter 7: stays 10 years; Chapter 13: stays 7 years)
• Civil judgments (removed from reports since 2017 for most people)
• Tax liens (removed from reports since 2018 for most people)

Credit report errors are surprisingly common. A Federal Trade Commission study found that 1 in 5 consumers had an error on at least one report.

Re-aged debts — Old negative items with an incorrectly updated date How errors affect you: A single incorrect late payment can lower your score by 60-100 points. An incorrect collection account can cost you 100+ points.

You have a legal right to dispute any information on your credit report that you believe is inaccurate. Here's the process:

Write down exactly what's wrong and what the correct information should be. Step 2: Gather documentation. Collect any proof that supports your dispute:

• Canceled checks or bank statements showing on-time payments
• Account statements showing correct balances
• Identity theft reports (if applicable)
• Letters from creditors confirming errors

Step 3: File your dispute. You can dispute with each bureau:

• Online: Equifax.com, Experian.com, TransUnion.com (fastest)
• By mail: Send a formal dispute letter via certified mail with return receipt
• By phone: Call the bureau's dispute department

Step 4: Wait for investigation. The bureau has 30 days (sometimes 45) to investigate. They contact the creditor, who must verify the information or it gets removed. Step 5: Review results. The bureau will send you updated results. If the error is corrected, great. If not, you can:

• Add a 100-word consumer statement to your report
• Escalate to the CFPB (Consumer Financial Protection Bureau)
• Dispute directly with the creditor (sometimes more effective)

Sample dispute letter key phrases:

• "I am writing to dispute the following information on my credit report"
• "This item is [inaccurate/incomplete] because..."
• "I am requesting that [the item be removed/corrected to show...]"

After checking your report, you may want to protect it. Two options:

• Doesn't affect your existing accounts or score
• Must be placed and lifted with each bureau separately
• Lift takes up to 1 hour (usually faster)
• Best for: Long-term identity protection

Credit Lock:

• May be free or paid (depends on the bureau)
• Same practical effect as a freeze
• Usually managed through an app with instant on/off toggle
• But: Not governed by federal law, only the bureau's terms of service
• Best for: People who frequently apply for credit and need quick access

Recommendation: Use a credit freeze (it's free and legally protected). Only use a lock if you need the convenience of instant toggling. How to freeze your credit:
