Three companies collect and maintain your credit information:
Equifax — Founded 1899, headquartered in Atlanta. Suffered a massive data breach in 2017 affecting 147 million Americans.
Experian — Founded 1996 (but roots go back to 1826), headquartered in Dublin, Ireland. Largest credit bureau globally.
TransUnion — Founded 1968, headquartered in Chicago. Known for strong credit monitoring products.

Why three? Each bureau collects data independently. Not all creditors report to all three, so your reports may differ. This is why checking all three matters.
How to get your free reports:
- AnnualCreditReport.com — The ONLY federally authorized source. Free weekly reports from all three bureaus.
- Do NOT use sites like "freecreditreport.com" — these are commercial sites that may require a paid subscription.
