BSE Credit Union was incorporated in May 1955 by 13 employees of the Berea City Schools who sought to create an alternative to traditional banks and savings institutions. Starting from modest beginnings in a small Berea office building, the credit union has grown to an asset base exceeding $10 million. In 1977, the organization relocated to its current headquarters at 19249 Bagley Road in Middleburg Heights, Ohio, which provides convenient I-71 access and expanded operational capacity.
BSE Credit Union offers a comprehensive suite of financial products including checking and savings accounts, share certificates, credit cards (BSE VISA), personal and auto loans, student loans, and online banking services through their Mona platform. The credit union provides listed offerings such as no-credit-check loan applications, pre-approval programs, skip-a-pay options, and mechanical repair coverage. Members also have access to auto and homeowners insurance services, ATM locators, and mobile banking functionality.
The credit union distinguishes itself through its member-owned, not-for-profit structure where profits are returned to members as better rates, lower fees, and higher dividends rather than flowing to shareholders. Governance is handled by a seven-member volunteer Board of Directors elected to staggered three-year terms by the membership, with board members representing various companies throughout the community and ranging from 1 to 30 years of service experience. A volunteer Supervisory Audit Committee conducts monthly audits to ensure state credit union compliance, supplemented by yearly audits from state examiners. The organization emphasizes up-to-date technology systems and a trained staff committed to member financial success.
BSE Credit Union's membership eligibility has expanded since 1971 beyond its original Berea Schools employee base to include anyone who lives, works, attends school, or participates in religious activities in Middleburg Heights, Berea, Brook Park, Olmsted Falls, or Olmsted Township. The primary limitation is geographic: membership is restricted to these specific Ohio service areas, making it inaccessible to consumers outside this region.
