Credit Report Review and Dispute Checklist
Use this worksheet when reviewing reports from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. It is educational and does not replace legal advice.
Get the right reports
- Use AnnualCreditReport.com or the credit bureaus directly.
- Download or save reports from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.
- Save the date you pulled each report.
Check identity details
- Name and spelling variations are correct.
- Current and former addresses look familiar.
- No unfamiliar employer, phone, or identity details appear.
Review accounts
- Every account belongs to you.
- Balances, limits, and payment history look right.
- No duplicate collection account appears for the same debt.
- Closed accounts are not marked open incorrectly.
- Negative items are not older than the reporting period allowed by law.
Prepare a dispute file
- Circle or note the exact error on the report.
- Collect statements, receipts, letters, or identity theft records.
- Write down the account name, account number, bureau, and error.
- Keep copies of everything you send.
Track follow-up
- Save dispute confirmation numbers.
- Write down submission dates.
- Review the bureau response and updated report.
- Escalate to CFPB, FTC, a state agency, or legal help if needed.
